I didn't know much about the movie, Grey Gardens, except for Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange star in it. That was reason enough for me to find out more. But the movie is based on the cousin and aunt of former First Lady and style icon, Jackie O.These women, Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, were style icons in their own right. These fabulous women became not-so-fabulous as they grew older to be strange, cat ladies. In 1975, Albert and David Maysles filmed a documentary about the strange women, which then turned into a play in New York City.
Now the documentary and play will air in feature film form on HBO this Saturday, April 18th.
Catherine Marie Thomas, who has designed costumes for 27 Dresses and the Kill Bill movies designed costumes for "Grey Gardens" (named after the name of the estate on which the Beales lived). The costumes were featured in Women's Wear Daily last week, and you have to check them out.
